Unifit is celebrating its 10th anniversary
The municipal swimming pool – A place for exercise
Until 2012, the building housed the Bochum municipal swimming pool. For 10 years, it served as a central hub for swimming, recreation, and socializing. Residents of Bochum learned to swim here, trained, or spent their free time in the water. The closure of the pool marked the end of a chapter in the city’s history—yet the connection between physical activity and community remained. The building was intended to remain a place for sports in the future as well.
The Renovation – From Swimming Pool to Training Area
Between 2014 and 2016, the former municipal swimming pool underwent extensive renovation. Step by step, the existing structure was transformed into a fitness center. The particular challenge was to blend the architecture of the old pool with new requirements. Where there used to be pools, training areas, class rooms, and open exercise spaces were created. The renovation preserved the history of the site while simultaneously ushering it into a new athletic future.
Unifit Today – Fitness across over 1,000 square meters
Since April 2016, Unifit has been a central hub for fitness at Ruhr University Bochum. Students, staff, alumni, and members of partner universities work out here in a space spanning over 1,000 square meters. In addition to modern strength and cardio equipment, Unifit offers a wide range of options, including fitness cages, multi-racks, free weights, and a spacious stretching area. The offerings are complemented by numerous classes in the adjacent rooms—ranging from acroyoga to Zumba. For a decade now, Unifit has stood for modern training, diversity, and communal exercise.
