From a diving course with three students to today’s wide range of courses
In the winter semester of 1976, Helmut Schreiber organised RUB’s first diving course. Three students took part, sharing two sets of scuba equipment. This marked the start of dive training within the university sports, which continues today. In 1977, diving became a regular part of University Sports. With support from Gregor Kalender, the diving training expanded to include more training opportunities.
In 2018, former diving instructor Wolfgang Schuh handed over responsibility for dive training to Dirk Fregin. Dirk, (Instructor Trainer), has organised RUB’s diving courses ever since. His team includes Daniela Piotrowski, Thomas Brüggemann and Joseph Keller (all Master Instructors), as well as other assistant diving instructors.
Today, the diving training offers around nine to twelve courses per semester, each with about 20 participants. Ten weekend trips to Grevelingenmeer each year and a trip to L’Estartit in Spain complete the diving training.
For 50 years, many people have helped make diving at RUB possible. This takes a lot of time, energy and dedication. When asked why they do it, the dive team says:“It’s simple: we’re a little crazy about diving! For us, diving means passion, community and the joy of sharing our enthusiasm with others. We want to introduce people safely to this fascinating, sometimes underestimated sport and help them build confidence in their own abilities.”
Thank you to the whole team for your years of dedication – here’s to 50 years of diving and many more to come!
