The University Sports Department receives active support from its chairpersons in sending students and staff to national university championships.
Each year, the University Sports Bochum sends approximately 150–200 students to about 25 German national university championships (DHM), which are hosted by various universities throughout Germany. To ensure that the necessary organizational efforts run smoothly, dedicated students and staff members at RUB serve as representatives, playing a key supporting role.
Chairpersons are athletes who compete at a high level in their respective sports while also actively participating on a volunteer basis in the process of organizing these events and being involved in them.
The main task of a chairperson is to inform eligible athletes in their sport about the event and the opportunity to participate in the run-up to a DHM, to compile the necessary data and documents, and, if needed, to coordinate group travel for participants in and out of the event together with university sports officials. Through the collaboration between full-time and volunteer staff, a larger network within each sport is created, and processes are streamlined.
Team captains thus benefit not only from valuable experience in project management and organization, but also from networking with other athletes. Especially in individual sports, this role offers the opportunity to make connections, exchange ideas with like-minded people, and compete as a “team” at the DHM.
