World University Games
The FISU Attribution Plaque is currently visiting numerous university locations in NRW on the occasion of the 2025 FISU World University Games. Last week, it made a stop in Bochum.
On 15 May 2021, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) awarded the 2025 FISU World University Games to the Rhine-Ruhr region. During the meeting of the Executive Committee, the FISU Attribution Plaque was handed over to the adh Board Chairman Jörg Förster in Düsseldorf. As a symbol for the starting signal, the plaque now "visits" the various venues of the mega-event as well as universities in the region - similar to the Olympic fire.
After the Attribution Plaque had already made stops in Dortmund and Wuppertal, it came to Bochum last week. Rector Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich and Chancellor Dr. Christina Reinhardt did not miss the opportunity to meet the plaque in person for a short photo shoot. Petra Platen (Dean of the Faculty of Sports Science), Anna Kroniger (RUB top-class athlete) and Ines Lenze (Head of University Sports Bochum) were also present.
The World University Games 2025 will show the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Region from its best side: as a meeting place for young people, as a science location and as a partner of top-class sport!
The RUB university management is very pleased about the awarding of the World Univercity Games 2025 to the Rhine-Ruhr region. It is a very special situation, especially for young athletes like swimmer Anna Kroniger, because she can still take part in the event herself due to her young age. The age limit is 25 years.
The competitions will be held in Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr. In Bochum, the Lohrheidestadion (track and field) and the Rundsporthalle (basketball and volleyball) are used.
It is wonderful to be able to host the World University Games 2025 in North Rhine-Westphalia. This gives the Faculty of Sport Science the opportunity to organise the accompanying "FISU World Conference on Student Development through Sport" together with the two UAR partner institutions, the Institute of Sport and Sport Science at the Technical University of Dortmund and the Institute of Sport and Movement Sciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen, under the umbrella of the Ruhr Alliance of Sport Science. Initial talks for a joint application are currently being held.
In addition to the numerous sporting competitions, there will also be accompanying scientific conferences and events. The RUB and especially the Faculty of Sports Science is very interested in hosting such accompanying events in Bochum.
After the photo session with the Chancellor and the Rector, there was another photo session at the Lohrheidestadion in Bochum with Ines Lenze and Dietmar Dieckmann (Head of the Department of Culture of the City of Bochum). Finally, on Thursday, the plaque was transported in a climate-neutral way by the university sports director duo Ines Lenze and Christian Sendes by bicycle to the University of Duisburg-Essen, where the World University Games 2025 will be advertised this week.
