Five students from Ruhr University Bochum represented RUB and Germany on the international stage at the World University Championships (WUC) in rowing in Canada. The Bochum rowers put in strong performances right from the preliminary heats: All five RUB students qualified for their respective finals with their boats.
Kaspar Virnekäs delivered the best result. Together with his partner from TU Dresden, he took third place in the men’s coxless pair, securing the bronze medal.
The men’s four also reached the final and featured three RUB students. Sven Achterfeld, Julian Garth, and Paul Martin, along with the rest of their team, finished in fifth place.
The men’s eight final was particularly close. With Sven Achterfeld, Julian Garth, Paul Martin, and Tom Tewes, the boat featured four students from Ruhr University Bochum. In the end, the team finished in fifth place—just half a second shy of the bronze medal. The disappointment over narrowly missing the podium was correspondingly large.
There was also cause for celebration outside the university championships: Jarno Bäschnitt achieved success twice at the European Swimming Championships.
He won the bronze medal with the German men’s 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay team. The mixed 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay was even more successful, with Jarno Bäschnitt securing the silver medal.
What made this special: Both German relay teams also set new German records in their races.
The University Sports Department at Ruhr University Bochum extends its heartfelt congratulations to all athletes on their outstanding performances and is delighted with the RUB students’ success in international competitions.
