The men’s handball team from Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) claimed the title at the 2026 German University Championships (DHM) in Oldenburg! The women’s team finished in fourth place. The event, which took place from June 13 to 14, was hosted by University Sports Hamburg and was a complete success.
A total of 12 men’s and 10 women’s teams from across Germany participated. The teams arrived on Friday evening and kicked off the tournament in high spirits with a welcome barbecue. The compact weekend format, which was successfully introduced in Dresden in 2025, was well-received again this year.
The RUB players made it clear from the start that they were determined to win the title. With convincing victories in the preliminary round and the quarterfinals, they faced their archrivals from the University of Duisburg-Essen in the semifinals, a match they won 15–12 in the 20-minute game. In the final, they secured an easy 15–7 victory over the University of Karlsruhe, which was celebrated extensively by the team and their coaches, Jörn Uhrmeister and Rico Gutschlag.
On the women’s side, the RUB handball team suffered an unfortunate semifinal loss by just one goal to the strong team from Cologne (10–11) and then, unfortunately, also fell to the University of Münster in the third-place match.
The RUB men's handball team has qualified for the 2027 European Universities Handball Championship in Montenegro.
Congratulations to our handball players on this tremendous achievement!
