The university’s own gym has been running for more than a decade now in the former municipal swimming facility of the city of Bochum.
The former municipal swimming pool – A place for movement
Until 2012, the building housed the Bochum City swimming facility. For decades, it was a central hub for swimming, recreation, and socializing. Bochum residents learned to swim here, trained, or spent their free time in the water. The closure of the facility marked the end of a chapter in the city’s history—yet the connection between physical activity and community remained. The building was intended to remain a place for sports in the future as well.
The Renovation – From Swimming Pool to Fitness Center
Between 2014 and 2016, the former municipal swimming pool underwent extensive renovation. Step by step, the existing structure was transformed into a fitness gym. The particular challenge was to blend the architecture of the old pool with new requirements. Where there used to be pools, training areas, class rooms, and open exercise spaces were created. The renovation preserved the history of the site while simultaneously ushering it into a new athletic future.
