The University Sports Year 2020

The German University Championships in Indoor Athletics took place in February. This was an extremely successful competition for the RUB students, with 6 medals won. Unfortunately, due to the Corona pandemic, all other university sports events for 2020 had to be cancelled.

In mid-February, we were still allowed to gather in groups: Vice-Rector Prof. Kornelia Freitag (back row, 4th from right) is pleased that University Sports hosted a board meeting of the European Network of Academic Sports Services (ENAS). Colleagues from six countries discussed and decided on strategic and political activities for the coming years.

Corona-compliant welcome rituals at Unifit: High Five became Low Feet. Despite a reduced number of training stations and special booking modalities, the irons were pumped at Unifit.

Whether it was drizzle, wind or cooler summer days, the artificial turf was used this year for relaxing strengthening in Pilates/Yoga, swinging the hips in Zumba/Salsa and getting some serious power in circuit training.

The university sports team also took on "non-sporty" challenges: In the song "Bochum" (Herbert Grönemeyer), which was created especially for the digital summer festival with the participation of many RUB institutions and personalities, the university sports team turned Unifit into a recording studio without further ado and - of course - sang about the "Doppelpass" (one-two). After two years of successful cooperation with VW Wicke (here: archive photo from 2017), we are pleased to have extended the contract for another two years. This way, university sports receives important support in times of crisis, which directly benefits course participants and competitive athletes. Thank you!

In a joint press release of 28 September, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia and the federal government pledged their support for the application of the German University Sports Association (adh) for the 2025 Summer Universiade. This means that there is a very high probability that the largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games will be held in the Rhine-Ruhr region in the summer of 2025.

In October, a total of 6 RUB students won medals at the European Rowing Championships in the Polish city of Poznan. Johannes Weißenfeld, Jakob Schneider, Malte Jakschik and cox Martin Sauer won gold in the men's eight. In addition, Larina Hillemann (coxswain of the women's eight) and Cosima Clotten in the women's lightweight double four each won silver medals.

The first University Sports live online offers started at the beginning of November. While at the beginning there was one course per day, you can now book up to 4 different courses per day. You can register for the online offers at any time via the link below.

Within the framework of the Deutschlandstipendium, 24 top-class athletes received a top-class sports scholarship in November. They will receive 300 € per month for one year, which should make it easier for them to combine their studies and competitive sport.

Unfortunately, this is what Unifit looked like for most of the year. But our eyes are now on the future.
