The University Sports Year 2022

Laura Nolte won the gold medal in the two-woman bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics in Beijing in February and was then allowed to sign the RUB guest book in the rector's office. In addition, Linn Kleine (cross-country running), as well as Nico Paufler, Nico Pickert and Leonard Bals (all canoeing) won medals at student world championships.

On the occasion of Europe Day on 9 May, the University Sports Department wanted to get as many students, staff and alumni of the nine universities in the international UNIC network moving as possible and therefore launched the digital UNIC Run: 384 participants from five universities took part, the RUB was the most enthusiastic university with 200 participants and 969 kilometres run.

The RUB has reaffirmed its will to be a "partner university of top-class sport" and to offer top athletes studying a dual career. On 30 May 2022, all participating institutions signed an updated cooperation agreement at Unifit.

This year, after a two-year break, the university football league finally took off again. In its first season, the Despa City team won the coveted championship title straight away.

Last weekend in June, almost 300 lacrosse players from all over Germany came to the Ruhr-Universität Bochum to take part in the adh-Open Lacrosse 2022. The women's team from Bochum came second at the event, which was organised by University Sports Bochum.

At the end of July, the two RUB handball teams took part in the EUSA Games. Numerous RUB students were also successful again at national level in German University Championships.

In August, after a break of almost 3 years due to Corona, the diving trip to Spain finally took place again. 36 divers spent a wonderful 10 days on the Costa Brava and discovered the underwater world during their dives.

From 2023, all participants in our „Unifit“ can look forward to even even more secure training conditions. Staff will then be who have been further qualified in injury prevention. On 05 December, „Unifit“ as the first Gym in Germany was accredited as "Safe Fitness Gym" by the Foundation for Safety in Sport.

Under the slogan "Screen off - Exercise on", we have been offering a moving outdoor break for all employees every Tuesday from 11:45-12:00 since 29 November. Together we want to mobilise, get some fresh air, activate our own "bio-heating" and have fun together!

Around 60 student athletes were honoured for their achievements on behalf of the Rectorate on 8 December 2022, 40 of whom came to the joint celebration in the Beckmannshof. This was the sixth time that University Sports Bochum had organised the central honouring of the athletes.

We focus on diversity, also in our programmes. This year we offered a total of 95 different sports and around 400 courses.
