The university sports year 2023

After 1.5 years, we were able to reopen the Hochschulsporthalle Westring in Bochum downtown for the winter semester. Volleyball, West Coast Swing, Zumba and, above all, archery take place here.

Part of the diving licence are the exams and exam preparations in open water. This year, 239 participants took part in 10 excursions to the surf centre at Brouwersdam (Netherlands).

In August and after two years of postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic, the World University Games took place in Chengdu, China, with around 8,000 participants from 140 countries. At the last edition before the "home games" of the Rhine-Ruhr World University Games 2025, which will – among other venues - be held in the Lohrheidestadion in Bochum-Wattenscheid, three members of the Ruhr-University were on site...

Tom Tewes (left), physics student, and Henry Hopmann (right), psychology student, and high-performance athletes in rowing, were nominated for the men’s eight. They won the silver medal under difficult climatic conditions. The students were beaming with the high-quality silver medal and Ines Lenze, Head of University Sports and Deputy Head of the delegation for the German team, was delighted for the top student athletes.

The new sport of hiking was introduced in the winter semester. Since then, many participants have been enthusiastic about the hiking courses, which are offered in various distances and environments.

Despite difficult circumstances at the beginning of the year, we were able to reach a record number of participants in the winter semester.

Around 80 student athletes were honoured for their achievements by the Rectorate and University Sports at Beckmanns Hof on 13 December 2023. This year, they won a total of 12 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals at the German University Championships.

Once again this year, there were exciting matches in the race for the Uni League title. With 16 teams, there are currently more teams taking part than ever before. The final of the winter championship will take place on 22.01.24.
