Competitive sport
RUB students and doctoral candidates return successfully from the German University Championships in Ju-Jutsu. With a total of 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals, they set a strong example in Osnabrück and provided a sporting highlight.
Jakob Schneider, a student teacher of biology and social sciences, won the gold medal in the open weight category after coming second last year. He also secured silver in the newly introduced NoGi class (without kimono). This innovation in the Ju-Jutsu Association, which picks up on modern trends and expands the range of competitions on offer, was very well received and attracted numerous participants.
In the same weight category, Olavo Cavalho Haase, a Brazilian doctoral student in mechanical engineering who has only been in Germany for a few months, won both a silver and a bronze medal. The team's newcomers also impressively demonstrated their talent: Egehan Caker (Linguistics) and Marlon Klein (Sports Science) dominated their divisions and crowned their debuts with a gold medal each. National team member Georg Stin (also linguistics) faced a special challenge. Due to a lack of entries in his own weight class, he switched to a higher category. Despite a dip in form, which was understandable a few weeks after the world championships, he fought his way to two bronze medals. In addition to the medals, the podium finishers also received tickets for the World University Games in the Ruhr region, which the athletes are looking forward to with great anticipation.
This impressive medal tally made Ruhr-Universität Bochum the most successful university at the tournament.
