50 days to go until the World University Games! - Interview with Jasper Angl

With just a few weeks to go until the start of the World University Games 2025, the German University Sports Association (adh) has used the proximity to the event as the perfect opportunity to talk to the nominated athletes. Recently interviewed was rower Jasper Angl, who studies computer science at RUB alongside his career in competitive sport. The interview was conducted by adh public relations officer Julia Frasch.

Jasper, what does the nomination for the FISU World University Games 2025 in your own country mean to you?

The nomination is something special for me. The World University Games are one of the biggest multi-sport events in the world - to be able to take part in them in your own country is really special. It's an opportunity to show off in front of a home crowd and be part of something big. Due to my age, this summer will also be my last opportunity to compete at the FISU Games.

What are your expectations - both athletically and personally - for the home event in the Rhine-Ruhr region?

In sporting terms, I want to impress with a good performance. Personally, I'm hoping for an inspiring atmosphere - for me, but also for the audience.
Of course, my goal is to win a medal - but it's just as important for me to develop as an athlete and enjoy the FISU Games.

What fascinates you about elite sport - what does it give you?

For me, elite sport is more than just competition. It gives you structure, determination - and an environment that challenges and encourages you. The feeling of seeing progress after hard work is simply unique.

How do you manage the combination of studying at Bochum University and top-class sport?

It's a challenge, but that's exactly what makes it exciting. Studying challenges my mind, training challenges my body - the variety helps me to stay motivated in both areas.

What support do you get from the university and from those around you?

I'm lucky to have a supportive environment from all sides, which is extremely important. The university also accommodates me with flexibility when it comes to exams and submissions.

What are your long-term goals in sport and professionally after your studies?

In terms of sport, I want to go to the Olympic Games again, but this time not as a substitute (editor's note: Paris 2024), but as a key member of the team - hopefully with medal success. Professionally, after completing a Master's degree in computer science, I would probably like to gain a foothold in the field of data science - preferably in an environment that combines technical thinking with teamwork.

What message would you like to pass on to your fans and all readers?

Take the opportunity to experience the World University Games live - sport unites, motivates and shows what is possible with passion.

University Sports congratulates Jasper on his nomination for the FISU Games and wishes him every success for his participation.
