Top-class sport
The Olympic and Paralympic year 2024 was a successful one for Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the city of Bochum. On 16 October 2024, they therefore for the first time jointly honoured the athletes from Bochum and Ruhr-Universität who took part in the Games. Seven of them came to the ceremonial reception in the town hall.
The athletes ceremoniously signed the city's book. Among those honoured were Isabell Thal, who came fifth in para judo, and Sönke Kruse and Julius Christ, who came sixth in the coxless pair. Pia Greiten impressed with her bronze medal in the quadruple sculls. Pia brought this to the event as a small highlight. Athlete Marius Probst, who narrowly missed out on the semi-finals in the 1,500 metre race, was also honoured. Max John and Jasper Angl were among those in the German rowing team, which took fourth place.
In his speech, Mayor Thomas Eiskirch emphasised the city of Bochum's pride in the sporting achievements: ‘Congratulations to you all. We are proud that you have represented Bochum, but above all we are proud of your commitment and your performance in your discipline.’ He also appreciated the special regulations at RUB, which enable athletes to combine their studies and sport.
Rector Martin Paul also honoured the athletes: ‘You have made the city and RUB more visible to the world.’ In his welcoming address, Paul also referred to over 50 cadre athletes who are studying at the RUB as a partner university of top-class sport.
A look to the future was also a must: "We are looking forward to playing an active role as RUB at the World University Games 2025," said Paul. Jasper Angl and Sönke Kruse are just two of many top athletes who have the opportunity to qualify for the upcoming tournament.
