RUB swimming team shines at the German University Championships

With 22 medals and a strong team spirit, our athletes swam their way to the top at the German University Championships in Düsseldorf - and secured the RUB the title of "Best University in Swimming 2025".

17 athletes from Ruhr-Universität Bochum returned from the German University Swimming Championships (June 14-15, 2025 in Düsseldorf) with an impressive result: they achieved a total of 22 podium places - and thus confidently secured first place in the overall university rankings with 276 points. The team thus left the competition from Cologne (254 points) and Hanover (118 points) well behind.

Individual top performances at a glance:

  • Amelie Makoski impressed with two gold medals in the 50 m and 100 m breaststroke events.
  • Theresa Bechtel swam to a gold medal in the 100 m butterfly and added to her tally with silver in the 50 m freestyle and 50 m butterfly.
  • Lilly Ruberg shone with gold in the 200 m backstroke and silver in the 100 m backstroke.
  • Charlotte Wendel won gold in the 100 m freestyle and bronze in the 200 m medley.
  • Nikola Schubert was rewarded for her achievements in the breaststroke with silver in the 200 m and bronze in the 100 m.

The women's team was also unbeatable in the relay competitions: two relay gold medals in the 4×100 m medley and 4×100 m freestyle rounded off the outstanding results.

Strong performances from the men's team too:

  • Marius Schimnatkowski secured gold in the 200 m butterfly and two bronze medals in the 50 m and 200 m backstroke.
  • Simon Reineke, a participant in the World University Games, dominated the 400 m freestyle in 4:01.11 min - a time that was well under the standard limit of 4:19.5 min - and deservedly secured the gold medal.

Further medals in the relay competitions:

  • Gold in the 6×50 m butterfly mixed (M. Schimnatkowski, B. Atmar, Mondroch, N., C. Wendel, J. Paul, T. Bechtel)
  • Silver in the 6×50 m breaststroke mixed (B. Atmar, A. R. Nickel, M. Schimnatkowski, N. Schubert, N. Mondroch, A. Makoski)
  • Silver in the men's 4×100 m freestyle - only two tenths of a second behind first place (S. Reineke, M. Schimnatkowski, F. Nguyen, N. Mondroch)
  • Silver in the 8×50 m medley mixed (M. Schimnatkowski, L. Ruberg, A. Makoski, N. Mondroch, T. Bechtel, C. Wendel, D. Drenker, F. Nguyen)

With an impressive lead, the RUB team secured the title of "Best University in Swimming 2025".
