Competitive sport
The German University Rowing Championships took place in Cologne on 8 and 9 July. The RUB students won 3 gold medals and one bronze medal.
The DHM Rowing 2023 was extremely successful for the students of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. RUB entered two boats in the men's coxless double. William Strulick and Richard Aurich finished fifth in the final. Things went better for the duo Henning Käufer and Francis Kinda Olinga. They took the lead in the final right after the start and were able to keep up the pace until the finish, allowing the two RUB students to win the race by one boat length ahead of the boat from WG Munich. This qualified the duo for the European University Championships (EUC) 2024.
The final in the women's double sculls was just as successful for RUB students Lena Laska and Anne Fischer. In an extremely fast race, the two were only able to break away from their competitors 250 metres before the finish line and win the final by half a boat length. This means that Laska and Fischer are also qualified for the EUC 2024.
Anne Fischer was also convincing in the women's single and secured the bronze medal in an exciting final race. Laura Heinemann, a student from Bochum, also competed in the women's lightweight single. She finished in a good fourth place in the final standings.
In the mixed eight, the race was also very successful for the Ruhr-Universität boat. In a very close race, the largest RUB boat narrowly beat the boats from Karlsruhe and Dortmund. The RUB eight was crewed by the following students: Laura Heinemann (coxswain), Sven Achterfeld, Lennart van Beem, Florian Klar, Simon Höck, Maja Brouka, Lina Gellweiler, Anne Fischer, Lena Laska
